Water Baptism at HFMC
(Posted by Jason Silver)
Water baptism is a sacrament of the church, commanded by our Lord and to be administered to all believers. It is a symbol of the new covenant of grace and signifies acceptance of the benefits of the atonement of Jesus Christ. By means of this sacrament, believers declare their faith in Jesus Christ.
For the Christian today, baptism may be the occasion for profound spiritual illumination. It can awaken within the believer the deeply satisfying awareness that he/she has joined the great numbers of baptized Christians, living and dead, who make up the Church of Jesus Christ. Christian baptism is to be celebrated by all believers as commanded by our Lord in Matthew 28:18-20.
For the Apostle Paul, baptism is:
- to be a member of the church, the body of Christ (Galatians 3:27ff)
- identifying with being baptized by one Spirit (the Holy Spirit) into one body (1 Cor 12:13)
- declaring the putting to death the “old man” and being raised as “a new creation” (Romans 6:4, Colossians 3:3-13)
